Are library cards free?

  • Cards are free to all City of Eugene residents or property owners. Check if your residential address is in the City limits
  • All students enrolled in Eugene School District 4J and Bethel School District can get a free library card, even if you live outside City limits.
  • All children from birth up to kindergarten who live in Eugene School District 4J and Bethel School District can get a free library card, even if you live outside City limits.
  • Teachers and staff in Eugene public and private K-12 schools can get a free library card for work use, even if you live outside City limits.
  • Others can purchase a card. Gift certificates are available.

How do I get a card?

Sign up for a library card by calling us: 541-682-5450. Or sign up in person at any library location. The information on this page provides step-by-step instructions,  but you're welcome to simply  call or visit and we'll assist you.


Residents of the City of Eugene and all 4J/Bethel students and young children

  • By phone: Call to sign up for your free library card and you will be able to use online resources and place hold requests immediately. Within 30 days, you will need visit in person to show your government-issued photo ID and proof of address. An Oregon driver license/ID meets both needs. Other accepted documents.
  • In person: Visit any library location to sign up for your free full-service library card. You will need to show your government-issued photo ID and proof of address. An Oregon driver license/ID meets both needs. Other accepted documents. You will also complete a brief application form.   • If you are under 16:
    • A parent or legal guardian needs to sign up for children and teens under 16. Call the library to start the process and you will be able to begin using online resources and placing hold requests immediately. Or you can visit together in person.
    • If you start the process by phone, then within 30 days, you will need to visit in person and bring your parent or legal guardian with you. They will need to show the accepted documents. (Legal guardians additionally need to show court-approved documents of guardianship.)
    • If it's difficult for your parent to visit the library, you can pick up or print an application to bring to your parent to sign. Then you can bring  it with the required accepted documents in your parent’s name. (Legal guardians must visit in person.)
    • There is no minimum age for getting a library card.
    • All students enrolled in Eugene School District 4J and Bethel School District, and all children from birth up to kindergarten who live in those districts, can get a free library card, even if you live outside City limits. 

Non-residents

  • If you live outside City of Eugene limits (and you are not a 4J/Bethel student or young child), the sign-up process is the same as for residents, except you will need to pay $11 per month for your card. One "non-resident" fee covers all cards in your household. You can pay with a credit card by phone.

Teachers and school staff

  • Teachers and staff in Eugene public and private K-12 schools can get a free library card for work use, even if you live outside City limits.
  • Visit any library location and show your school photo ID and proof of address to sign up. Or call to begin using online resources and placing hold requests immediately. Within 30 days, you will need to visit in person to show your school photo ID and proof of address.

How do I renew my library card?

Please renew by expiration date, or all use of your card will be temporarily stopped.


Residents of the City of Eugene and all 4J/Bethel students and young children

  • In person: For full use of your library card, including borrowing physical items, visit in person. Bring your library card and your Oregon driver license/ID. (If you do not have an Oregon driver license/ID: other documents we can accept.) 
  • By phone: If you have a full-service card now, you can call to renew for one 30-day period of online use only. Within 30 days, you'll need to visit in person to show photo ID and proof of address in order to continue using your card. (If your current card is for online use only, you have already used those 30 days and must complete your renewal in person.)

Non-Residents

  • Please visit or call to renew your card by paying the household fee of $11 per month. To borrow physical items, bring your library card and your Oregon driver license/ID. (If you do not have an Oregon driver license/ID: other documents we can accept.)

Responsibilities

  • You are responsible for all materials borrowed, and any fees or misuse of the card.
  • To protect your account’s confidentiality and security, treat your library card the same as a bank card. Don’t lend it to anyone, share your password, or write it on the card.
  • Update your account whenever there are changes to your name, address, phone, or email address.
  • If your card is lost or stolen, contact us immediately and we will block its use by anyone else. There is a $1 charge for a replacement card.

  • Using the Info Hub and other online services 24/7.

Services available without a Eugene Public Library card

  • Assistance of staff in person, online and by phone.
  • Limited use of computers to access the Internet.
  • On-site wireless Internet access.
  • Events, classes, and activities for all ages, including online.
