After an hour and half of discussion, we, jurors unanimously chose "Survivalist Perspective" as this year’s juror’s choice award out of competitive fourteen finalists’ works. The artist’s intention is clearly present with her use of tactile textile medium. All the layers and repeated patterns convey the strength against historical and ongoing struggles, which touches on current social issues. 2020 Mayor's Art Show Jurors
Bill Rutherford
Bill Rutherford is a third generation Oregonian and multidisciplinary artist. His 2 and 3D works, range from canvases to masks and metal sculptures. He is currently producing work that offer cultural expressions of his Black and Chickasaw heritages.
Bill owned and operated an exhibit design business for 23 years for US and European Trade Shows along with an Industrial Trade Show business. He designed and engineered Interstate demo buses for traveling trade shows along with architectural interiors for Oregon Lottery and electro-mechanical demos for Industrial Trade Shows including the production of an industrial video for a client for trade Show presentations.
His work is showcased in the United States and Europe. A collection of Chinook Spiritual Masks he created will become a permanent display in Astoria Maritime Museum.
Mika Aono
Mika Aono is a multidisciplinary artist living in Eugene, OR. Her recent work explores humanness in absurdity and futility through laborious processes, giving meaning to the meaningless. Her fascination for nature has driven her projects and installations utilizing discarded objects. She cherishes serendipitous moments and believes art has the power to solve the mystery and connect all sorts of life on earth. She wishes she were a gentle superhero.
Born in Sendai, Japan. Received BA in Primary and Special Ed from Miyagi University of Education in Japan, BA in Art from University of Oregon and MFA in Printmaking from San Francisco Art Institute. Currently, she teaches printmaking and works as a studio technician in the Department of Art at the University of Oregon.
Her work has been shown at various venues nationally and in international exhibitions in India, Spain, Brazil, Canada and Switzerland; some are in museum/public collections.
Jam Jessie Allison
Jam Jessie Allison is an lesbian transgender artist, activist, DIY’er extraordinaire, and performance artist living on the stolen lands of the Kalapuya tribes in Eugene, OR. She graduated from the University of Oregon with her MFA in 2015. Since then founded Tropical Contemporary, an art collective who’s mission is to provide space, funding, and tools to marginalized artists. She helped start the Transformation Residency Program, the first artist residency specifically for artists who are transgender. She has also performed with the drag collective the Farce Family at gay and queer nightclubs and music festivals across the country. She lives with her girlfriend, queer roommates, one cat, eight chickens and one rabbit. Black Lives Matter.
