Artist Bio
I am the descendant of immigrant Irish sheep thieves and have been painting since I was in grade school. Though I grew up overseas, in a dozen countries and cultures, I have been stable here in Eugene, painting and teaching at Lane Community College, University of Oregon and my studio for 25 years now. I live in a big house with a fantastic garden, two dogs, a husband, a daughter, some yurts and a studio. In the studio I work in oils, acrylics, drypoint, charcoal, woodblock, spherical paintings, sculpture, watercolor, hemispheres and ceramics, but in the end my real passions are drawing, painting and teaching.
Artist Statement
It is not as if a life or a thought or an emotion goes in a straight line or ever represents a single theme inside us. Tangled is how I see the life and passage of my father through time, the knotting of my insecurities avoiding my words, the sight line of my grandmother looking out from my daughter's eyes. It is a thread in space and threads are always moving, yet paintings trap them still so what you see is a single instant of that swirling set of processes as they wriggle through space.
